Government Investment Driving Innovation in Recreational Fishing Sustainability
The Australian Government continues to demonstrate world-leading leadership in the recreational fishing industry through bold investments that are transforming sustainability practices and setting new global benchmarks.
In partnership with Rig Recycle and powered by the Tangaroa Blue Foundation, government investment has been the catalyst for an innovative shift – turning what was once a major industry waste stream into a thriving, circular economy. This program exemplifies how strategic government funding, paired with industry collaboration, can deliver practical, scalable solutions that benefit both the environment and the economy.
With strong support from both federal and state governments, Rig Recycle is now scaling up production of recycled, value-added products—showcasing Australia’s ability to lead the way in sustainable manufacturing. The program’s success is already gaining international attention, positioning Australia as a global innovator in recreational fishing waste recovery.
A key highlight of this investment-driven innovation was unveiled recently at the FRDC Circular Fishing workshop. I had the honour of joining Colin Tannahill, CEO of Shimano, to launch the groundbreaking Line Cutter—developed through a unique partnership between Rig Recycle, Telford Smith (an Australian recycling engineering leader), and key government stakeholders. This product reflects the power of public-private collaboration, funded in part by government investment, to create tangible solutions that reduce waste and protect our marine environments.
The Line Cutter is now moving into final retail preparations and is being introduced to fishing clubs nationwide, backed by ongoing government support and will be rolled out broadly in 2025—providing fishers with sustainable tools and training across Australia.
Since Rig Recycle’s official launch at the 2022 AFTA Trade Show, the Australian Government’s commitment has been pivotal in driving this initiative forward. The 2025 Trade Show will further showcase the next wave of locally developed products designed specifically for Australian recreational fishers.
Our national inclusive program is made possible by the dedicated investment from our government partners, as well as the collaborative efforts of councils, stores, the fishing community, philanthropic supporters, and industry leaders. Together, we are building a circular supply chain—from manufacturers to consumers—that secures the future of our industry while protecting our natural environment.
I extend sincere thanks to our government funders, Tangaroa Blue’s team, our recycling and plastics industry partners, and the volunteers who continue to make this program a success. Through collaborative leadership and investment in innovation, we are shaping a sustainable future for Australia’s recreational fishing community.
