COLIN TANNAHILL

Hall of Fame Inductee 2019

Award presented by Trevor Maundrell

Colin began his career in the fishing tackle industry in a retail position at just 16 years of age. He has been in the business for over 40 years, holding various roles in both retail and wholesale. His career has included positions at Fishing & Shooting, Sportsman’s Centre, Jarvis Walker, Victorian Distribution, JV Marine and Shimano.

In 1984, Colin moved into a wholesale role with Jarvis Walker, where he was instrumental in the strategic direction of the business. In 1992, he created and ran the unique agency business Victorian Distribution for many years with his great tackle industry mate Brian Black. Colin then spent approximately 9 years at JV Marine, contributing significantly to the growth of the business. JV Marine became the number one independent retailer in Australia during Colin’s years at the helm of the tackle business.

It was during this time that Colin formed a solid relationship with industry stalwart John Dunphy, leading to his joining Shimano. He remains today as Managing Director of Shimano Oceania, overseeing both the fishing tackle and bicycle divisions.

Career achievements aside, Colin’s most notable role was his voluntary one on the AFTA Board as its President. When he stepped into the role, it’s fair to say AFTA was not in a great position. Colin set about gathering commitment to make changes from the board members, spending considerable personal time to enhance and unify the organisation. Colin was pleased to give back to the fishing industry, which has greatly impacted and shaped his life. He is dedicated to protecting the future of the recreational fishing industry, ensuring the young people of today and in the future have the same employment opportunities he had at the age of 16. His achievements as the AFTA President over the last two years are regarded as significant and appreciated by all in the industry.
