Let’s Go Fishing
The Australian Fishing Trade Association (AFTA), in partnership with the Marine Teachers Association (MTA) and NSW Department of Primary Industries have placed fishing gear into 50 schools in NSW.
Greg McNeil, President of MTA explains. “This program allow the participating schools to organise and conduct fishing as part of the School’s activities. This means schools students can participate in the program, go fishing and learn about fishing as a sustainable activity. Not only do they learn how to use a rod and reel and bait a hook, they learn how to respect the fish they catch – and release, and the environment they engage with when fishing.”
AFTA President Colin Tannahill said “This is a great program. We want fishing to be as accessible for school students as other outdoor activities, like football, netball or cricket. The problem has been that schools have not had the fishing gear to organize fishing as an activity. The fishing kits we provide the schools include all the things they need to go fishing, including rods, reels, landing nets, hooks and sinkers.”
