Bow Regulations to change

Recently various campaigns have begun regarding the recent push to ban the use of bows for taking animals within South Australia. RecFish SA have been proactive in seeking clarity on how this will impact recreational fishers around the state to enable strong and nimble action if required.

RecFish SA were engaged in 2023 to navigate animal welfare changes, and potential impact to recreational fishing. We strongly advised correct wording within possible legislation change to avoid unnecessary restriction on activities SA community members rely on for gathering food and functioning as per usual in recreational pursuits.

Due to the mechanics of bow hunting, concern was raised on the difference between bow hunting, and the use of bows and spearguns for the taking of fish.

PIRSA have advised no change will occur for bow fishing or spearfishing for the recreational fishing sector.

76—Use of bow and arrow

The taking of fish by any person in the waters of the State by use of a bow and arrow other than the taking of Carp of any species (Family Cyprinidae)—

(a) in the waters of the River Murray other than the main stream; and

(b) during daylight hours; and

(c) by use of a bow and arrow (not being a crossbow) where the person keeps, while using the bow and arrow, a distance of at least 50 metres from all other persons not directly involved in that fishing activity.
