DPIRD Fisheries is supporting more women to participate in recreational fishing through the NSW Government’s Fishcare program and its Women on the Water events. These initiatives provide opportunities for women of all experience levels to build confidence, develop fishing skills and connect with other recreational fishers.

During July, Women on the Water events were held at Lake Illawarra, Sydney and The Entrance, attracting 82 participants for a day of fishing, learning and sharing experiences. The events were supported by 21 volunteers, with experienced anglers Mel Spikes and Vicki Lear generously sharing their knowledge and practical fishing skills with participants.

The success of these events was evident beyond the day itself, with participants returning to their local fishing spots and sharing photographs of catches including bream and luderick. This highlights the value of providing supportive opportunities for women to develop the confidence and skills to continue fishing independently.

As the weather warms, DPIRD Fisheries and the Fishcare team will continue to deliver Women on the Water events across NSW, including opportunities at inland rivers and impoundments. These events are an important part of encouraging greater participation in recreational fishing and helping build strong, connected fishing communities.

Women can also connect through the NSW Women in Recreational Fishing Facebook community, which provides a welcoming space for more than5,200 female fishers across NSW to share fishing tips, stories, photographs, advice and experiences.
