Gutwein will slug tinnies with secret fishing tax plan while Labor will improve infrastructure

  • Liberals won’t rule out tinnie tax
  • Gutwein’s secret tax risks Tasmanian way of life
  • Labor will invest $2 million to upgrade boat ramps and associated infrastructure

A majority Labor Government would stop the Liberals’ new tinnie tax and invest $2 million to upgrade boat ramps and associated infrastructure at key locations around the state.

Labor Leader Rebecca White said Peter Gutwein needed to rule out his plan to slug Tasmanians with a new, secret tinnie tax.

“Tasmania has some of the highest boat ownership numbers in the country and heading out onto the water to catch a fish with friends and family is a key part of the Tasmanian way of life,” Ms White said.

“The Minister for Primary Industries, Guy Barnett, has repeatedly refused to rule out the introduction of a ‘boat fishing levy’, which is a tax on recreational fishers.

“The plans for a boat fishing levy were first floated in a discussion paper for recreational sea fishing last year.

“It is highly suspicious that the draft Tasmanian recreational sea fishing strategy was due to be released in March but was delayed because of the election. What are the Liberals trying to hide?

“A Labor Government would stop this unfair tax grab and allow recreational fishers to spend well-earned downtime on our waterways without being punished.”

Ms White outlined Labor’s plan to commit $2 million to upgrade boat ramps and associated infrastructure around Tasmania.

“Labor will commit $2 million to upgrade boat ramps and improve amenities like parking, toilets and fish cleaning stations.

“A Labor Government will invest in Tasmanians boat ramps while the Liberals will slug tinnie owners with a new tax.

“Only Labor is working for Tasmanians.”
