Tasmanian Recreational Fishing Survey results out now!

The results from the latest survey of recreational fishers by the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies have been released.  They include recreational catch numbers for different species as well as information on when, where and how Tasmanians go fishing.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • Over 1 in 4 Tasmanians fish at least once a year (130,500 people).
  • Each fisher fishes an average of 5 days per year.
  • 81% of fishing is in saltwater – of which 61% of fishing is from boats and 39% from shore.

The most commonly kept scalefish were:

  1. Sand flathead- 381,000 kept (37% kept of 1.02 million caught).
  2. Australian salmon -92,000 kept  (50% kept of 183,000 caught).
  3. Calamari -38,000 kept (97% kept of 39,000 caught)

You can view a snapshot of the results in our What’s the Catch infographic or the IMAS Angling for Information brochure. The findings help us better understand recreational fishing in Tasmania and will be used to help inform stock assessments and fisheries management.
