Science has revealed a statewide sustainability issue with some key demersal species, including WA dhufish (pictured).
The latest scientific stock assessment results are in – and they show some of our favourite demersal species, including the iconic WA dhufish and pink snapper, are under pressure.
The science has revealed a statewide sustainability issue from continued high fishing pressure. Without action, the future of these much-loved species is at risk.
Next month, a demersal science and management forum with key fishing stakeholders and leading scientists will discuss the status and explore long-term management solutions to allow recovery of demersal fish stocks.
In the meantime, there are things we can all do. Recreational boat-based fishing for demersal scalefish has reopened in the West Coast bioregion from 16 September to 14 October, inclusive. We’re encouraging everyone to switch their fish this open season to help take the pressure off these vulnerable species.
