A New Approach to Men’s Physical Health, Mental Health and Connection Through Fishing, Nature, and Real Conversation
For decades, Aussie men have been told to “harden up.” But across fishing communities, trade sites, and backyards, that mindset is finally shifting. Jason Medcalf – someone many in this industry know well – is stepping in to help guide that change.
Jason has launched The Wild Reset Project, a new kind of retreat designed to give men space to breathe, reset, and reconnect – with themselves and with others. It’s not just about rest. It’s about rising – with a plan, with clarity, and with renewed energy.
When the Spark Goes Out
Jason Medcalf knows what it’s like to hit the wall.
To go from running businesses and doing “all the right things” to feeling completely lost -mentally, physically, emotionally. That slow burn of exhaustion, disconnection, and stress. And the quiet shame that often comes with it.
He also knows how hard it is to speak up.
This is especially true for blokes in our industry—the ones who get it done, who look after everyone else, and who often leave themselves last.
That’s why he built The Wild Reset Project.
Ten years into his own rebuilding journey, Jason saw what really works: open fires, stars, good food, good blokes, and a space where men can talk honestly and leave with real strategies – not just good intentions.
Fishing Is the Drawcard – But It’s Not the Point
Jason’s been involved in the fishing industry for over 30 years, writing articles, managing stores, presenting at shows, and appearing in media. He knows this community, its strengths, and its struggles.
The Wild Reset Project uses fishing as a hook – the thing that brings blokes in and keeps it familiar. But the real impact happens around the lake, the fire, the workshops and in the conversations, men rarely get to have.
A Reset That Actually Works
Held on a private 70-acre property just outside Bundaberg, The Wild Reset Project Retreats are designed to create a complete circuit-breaker – three nights away from the noise, with just the right mix of structure, support, and space.
Each retreat includes:
- Workshops on Sleep, Nutrition, Resilience, Purpose, and Connection
- Breathwork, guided movement, and optional cold-water sessions
- Fishing on a stocked private lake with barra, bass, jacks, and saratoga
- Honest, unfiltered conversations around the fire
- Guest speakers who’ve been through the dark and come out stronger
It’s all evidence-based, but it doesn’t feel clinical. It feels real.
Eight men left the first retreat with fresh energy, new habits, and a deeper sense of who they are. More importantly, they left with a plan—a plan they built themselves and committed to—not just for themselves but also for their families, businesses, and communities.
A Call to the Fishing Industry: Let’s Look After Our Own
Jason’s not asking for charity. He’s inviting the fishing community to back something that’s already changing lives. Whether it’s a mate, a staff member, a customer – or even yourself – this project is here for our people.
Ways to get involved:
- Retailers – Share on socials, have the conversation.
- Wholesalers & Brands – Sponsor a bloke, a staff member, donate gear, add a prize pack
- Media & Influencers – Tell the story, reach the right ears, get curious.
- Everyone – If you know someone carrying too much for too long—send them our way
Monthly retreats are now underway. The Wild Reset Project’s vision is to expand across the country and reach more men before they reach breaking point.
This Is More Than a Weekend Away
The Wild Reset Project isn’t just a getaway—it’s a lifeline for men who’ve lost connection or never had it. This is for blokes who don’t have the time or the tools to plan something like this themselves.
It’s a chance to step away from the pressure, to reset, and to return with clarity, strength, and a renewed sense of direction—with good people walking beside you.
Jason’s walked this path. That’s why he’s built something that doesn’t feel like therapy—it feels like a fire under the stars, good company and a conversation that can shift the course of a life.
